Openness & Accessibility Policy

Introduction

This code has been adopted by the Parochial Church Council and applies to both Christ Church and St Mark's

Mission

To be a church community open and accessible to all people of whatever age, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or creed and whether or not they have a disability.

Creating openness

Within the resources available to us, we aim to make our buildings, services and facilities increasingly open to all. Where we do not have the resources, we will budget each year to endeavour to make these resources available over time.

Legal Requirements

We recognise that we must comply with the law and will, to the best of our ability, comply with the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and with all the codes and Statutory Instruments that have been introduced relating to it, and all other relevant legislation.

Moral Obligations

As far as is reasonable within our resources we will not just seek to comply with the letter of the law but will seek to go the extra mile and lead the way by example in our community in our dealings with and welcome to all people.

Review of this policy

We will review this policy, our buildings and the access to them, our services and facilities, and the auxiliary aids we provide, at least once a year so as to ensure that we are meeting our legal and moral obligations.

Openness and Accessibility Committee

An Openness and Accessibility Committee will review our practice and procedures as outlined in this policy and as listed in Appendix One and will present a written report to the Parochial Church Council once a year with any recommendations. The Council will take appropriate action after taking due regard of the resources reasonably available.

Equal Treatment

We will treat all those using our buildings with dignity and respect, and will seek to provide an environment free from discrimination, victimisation, or harassment on the grounds of gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, religion, race, colour, ethnic or nation of origin. We will seek to be known in our neighbourhood as a church community that encourages these ideals.
