What is a Christian?

Christians believe that Jesus Christ shows us most clearly what God is like and that he makes it possible for us to live in a close relationship with God. In the company of other Christians we seek to strengthen and deepen that relationship and to follow the way that Jesus lived and taught. For Christians God is understood and known as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

He is Father because he is the loving creator, caring for all that he has made, and for every human being as his beloved child.

He is the Son because we believe that God revealed himself in the historical person of Jesus Christ, whom he called his son. Jesus' life, death and resurrection hold the key to knowing and loving God, and to making sense of life, before and after death.

He is Holy Spirit, God alive and active today. He sustains the life of the world, inspires faith, justice and truth in human beings, and gives spiritual gifts to the church so that lives are changed and society transformed.

Christianity is essentially about relationship and about community. We believe that the best way to find out about faith and prayer, to raise questions or to get help, is by meeting people who are themselves Christians.

Christ Church and St Mark's are just two of many Christian churches in this neighbourhood where you would receive a warm welcome.

You can also learn more about God as he is made known in Jesus by reading the Bible. A good place to begin might be the Gospel of Luke in the New Testament. Or you might also try the Rejesus website where you can find out a lot about his life and teaching. There is a splendid website launched by Holy Trinity Ripon, Church on the Net, designed especially for people who are looking for answers but who are not yet ready to walk into a church building.

Better still, why not find out about our Emmaus courses. They are specially designed to enable people to genuinely explore without any ‘pressure'.
